As with so many things, a lot of time has passed since I last visited The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Was my last FIDM post in 2020? Let’s not think about the wasted years. Instead, I want to write about my recent visit. While I may not see many movies, I love seeing the costumes! I’ll show you a sample.
The Color Purple
My favorite of those shown below is Shug Avery, portrayed by Taraji J. Henson. That red is spectacular, and I had to include at least one group shot featuring it. From left to right, the characters are Celie, Shug Avery, Sofia, Mister, and Young Celia.

Napoleon
Janty Yates and David Crossman designed the costumes for the film, Napoleon. I confess I was rooting for the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. Still, these coronation costumes are magnificent.

Barbie
I may not have seen many films in 2023, but I did watch Barbie. This clever film had great costumes designed by Jacqueline Durran. (At last, a familiar name!)

Poor Things
Holly Waddington was the costume designer for Poor Things. While I may have been pulling for other films, I have to admit Waddington’s designs are stellar! I can see why this one took home the Academy Award.

I’ve rushed to publish this post because the costume exhibit runs through April 20, 2024. Yikes, that’s only a couple of days away! If you want to see the textures and fabrics close-up, hurry to downtown Los Angeles. To see more of my photos, please click here.
Great review as always
Thanks, Dar. I appreciate your loyalty!
